Recently Style Counsel did a colour and style evening for Caci clinic. I was chatting to Rhonda Olson, Treatment Co-ordinator at Caci Clinic, and inevitably the convo turned to Botox (I’m curious ok?!)
To be honest I don’t know what I think about botox. On the one hand it sounds like a sensational idea- not looking like an old hag is right up my street! But there are the obvious negatives. Botulism in the face? Muscles freezing at weird angles for months? Being jabbed in sensitive areas multiple times with a sharp needle. Not my idea of a great time! And then there’s the “What will people think if I turn up with a frozen face?”
Rhonda very kindly said I wasn’t a complete plonker, this was what everyone worried about and I should come in for a complimentary consultation. Turns out botox has been the number one non-surgical procedure since 2000! OK, how could I say no?!!
As Rhonda put it, your face is the outfit you wear every day, (I like to use that one about hair so i’m hearing her!) I told her how my 4 year old was examining my face in bed the other morning and after we’d wondered about the big white patch of hair (note to self, book a hair appointment immediately!) he wondered, “What are all those lines?” and “Was I cross?”. Not the greatest when you are looking tired all the time and your kids are wondering if you are perpetually angry with them!
So there I was, waiting to see Gemma. She was so lovely and put me at ease immediately. She didn’t say I looked hideous (big tick in the box) but that we could flatten things out a bit and soften my look – love her!!! She went through everything thoroughly and I love that she was an actual nurse that also works in the emergency department (the heart was beating fairly fast, slightly breathless at thought of needle, you never know when an emergency nurse might come in handy!).
She started by taking hideously close-up photos of my wrinkled eyes and frown so we could compare before and after. Then I put on my brave big girls pants and sat up in the chair. She gave me a stress ball to squeeze and then prepared the area with little pen dots on my large frown lines – hard to miss but again, very professional! Finally the jabs started. To be honest, not the most fun I’ve had, but not like eating broken glass either! A bit of a sting but not as bad as I thought it would be at all. The stress ball was great and she was amazing, chatting to take my mind off it while obviously knowing exactly what to do. And it was over in a couple of minutes! Gemma gave me her card with her cell phone number on it in case I had any worries or questions, before our follow up appointment in 2 weeks. I don’t think I’ve ever had service like that!
Did I instantly look 10kgs and 20 years younger? Sadly no. Actually, I couldn’t notice any change. But Gemma said it would take a couple of days to take effect. So diligently I looked every night and, what do you know, I’m not so grumpy looking (even when I really am!!!) My frown lines are still there but they don’t get to move, and my kids said I look good- “Not grumpy Mummy” – happy days!!!! I’m really interested to see the before and after photo’s to compare.
I have to say that I still definitely have lines and movement, but if i’m honest that’s actually a really great way to be. I’m not “frozen” and looking like a startled rabbit and unless I tell you you’d never know I’d had it done. I think my wrinkles aren’t as prominent, and I’m looking more relaxed and less annoyed which is perfect, considering ’tis the season to be jolly. Do you know I even got on Santa’s “nice” list this year – been a long time coming!!!! Will keep you posted with my progress.
